TORONTO – So close and yet so far.
Toronto FC was minutes away from eliminating CF Montreal in the first round of the Canadian Championship on Wednesday night at BMO Field. But the Reds gave up a late equalizer in regulation time and then came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 penalty shootout loss to crash out of the competition.
Theo Corbeanu scored and had an assist while Tyrese Spicer also had a goal for Toronto through 90 minutes as the teams battled to a 2-2 draw. But both players failed to convert in the shootout, as did substitute Ola Brynhildsen.
“Incredibly disappointed. Disappointed because we lost not one lead, but two. We certainly felt like we did enough to win the game. Disappointed to give up the last goal. And there are so many different things that you could point to that lead to that. But at the end of the day … we have to close games out,” coach Robin Fraser said in the post-match press conference.
