Toronto FC shuts out San Diego FC for rare road win
- Toronto FC 1 (Corbeanu 20’), San Diego FC 0
- Corbeanu scores team-leading fifth goal of season for TFC
- Reds move up two spots to 12th in the Eastern Conference
This time there was no late collapse from Toronto FC.
TFC scored early and then masterfully protected the lead in earning an impressive 1-0 victory over Western Conference leaders San Diego FC at Snapdragon Stadium on Wednesday night.
Theo Corbeanu’s first-half goal stood up as the winner for Toronto (5-11-6) who leapfrogged two teams to move into 12th place in the Eastern Conference table while remaining 11 points out of a playoff spot with 12 matches remaining in the season. TFC have a game in hand on Charlotte FC, who hold down the ninth and final post-season berth in the East.
Wednesday’s win was TFC’s second in eight outings, and their sixth clean sheet and third road victory of the year in league play. It was also the perfect response from the Reds who were looking to kick off a very tough four-game road swing on a positive note after last Saturday’s disappointing home draw vs. draw vs. Atlanta United.
