Toronto FC swept by New York City FC in season series

  • Toronto FC 1 (Romero OG 70’), New York City FC 3 (Wolf 20’; Ilenic 49’; O'Toole 74’)
  • TFC lose 1st game since departure of Insigne and Bernardeschi
  • Kosi Thompson 17th player to make 100 appearances for the Reds

The more things change, the more things stay the same for Toronto FC.

After their best performance of the season last weekend, TFC looked rather flat and put in an uneven display en route to a 3-1 loss to New York City FC at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night.

This week’s contract buyouts of Italian DPs Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi meant this match marked the beginning of a new chapter in the Reds’ history. But instead of rising to the occasion, TFC looked uninspired in suffering another road defeat that dealt a crushing blow to their fading playoff chances.

Toronto (4-11-5) saw its modest two-game unbeaten run snapped while also squandering a chance to move up one spot to 12th in the Eastern Conference table with a win against New York, who swept the season series after earning a 1-0 victory at BMO Field on April 26.
