TFC's Laryea, Osorio named to Canada's Gold Cup squad
Despite a hamstring injury that sidelined him for nearly three months, Toronto FC wingback Richie Laryea will represent Canada at this summer's Concacaf Gold Cup.
Canadian men's team coach Jesse Marsch on Thursday unveiled his 26-man roster for the Gold Cup, which runs from June 14 to July 6 in 13 cities across the United States and Canada. Included in Marsch's squad are Laryea and TFC captain Jonathan Osorio.
"We're excited to be bringing a very strong squad to the upcoming Gold Cup. We're very confident in the group and are looking forward to challenging for the title,” Marsch said in a statement.
Canada opens its Gold Cup campaign against Honduras on June 17 in Vancouver before concluding its group stage with games vs. Curaçao (June 21) and El Salvador (June 24) in Houston. Canada is No. 30 in the current FIFA world rankings, well ahead of Honduras (No. 75), El Salvador (No. 81) and Curaçao (No. 90).
The inclusion of Laryea, 30, is somewhat curious when you consider what he's gone through this season with Toronto FC.
