TFC unbeaten in four after big road win in Chicago

  • Toronto FC 2 (Soteldo 2’; DeLeon 76’), Chicago Fire 1 (Medrán 77’)
  • TFC runs season-high unbeaten run to 4 games
  • Bono makes a career-high 13 saves for the Reds

Has Toronto FC officially turned the corner? It’s a bit too early to say, but the early signs under Javier Perez are very encouraging.

Playing with a makeshift four-man defence, TFC received goals from Yeferson Soteldo and Nick DeLeon, and a man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeper Alex Bono in a slim 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field on Saturday night. Toronto is unbeaten in 12 straight matches (with nine wins) against Chicago dating back to 2015.

Bono made a career-high 13 saves for TFC (3-8-4), who extended its season-best unbeaten run to four games. With the win, Toronto leapfrogged Chicago (3-9-3) into 12th place in the Eastern Conference. The Reds are unbeaten and have claimed eight of a possible 12 points since Perez took over as interim coach following the firing of Chris Armas on July 4.

“Coming to Chicago and getting road points is never easy. That’s really all that matters. We came here, ground it out as a team, and more important than anything we learned to suffer together today and grind out a result,” Bono told reporters after the game.
