TFC Flashback: Dichio scores 1st goal in club history

In this special video blog series for TFC Republic, I look back at key moments in the history of Toronto FC. This week: Danny Dichio becomes the club’s first goal-scorer.

Toronto FC stumbled out of the gate to start the 2007 season, the franchise’s first in Major League Soccer, as it suffered three consecutive shutout losses on the road. Looking to add some goal-scoring punch to his team, coach and GM Mo Johnston brought in veteran striker Danny Dichio, who previously played for Preston North End in the English Championship.

The team played its home opener on April 28 against the Kansas City Wizards, a game that also marked Dichio’s debut for the club, but there’d be no storybook ending as TFC suffered a 1-0 loss. The pressure was building on Toronto after going four matches without a goal.

Following a bye week after the Kansas City loss, Toronto hosted the Chicago Fire on May 12, the Reds’ fifth game of the season. In the 24th minute, a club legend was born - Dichio scored to register the club's first goal in MLS, and Toronto went on to win 3-1.
