Kadin Chung: 'I thought it was the best move' to leave TFC

Kadin Chung's tenure with Toronto FC was fleeting, but he doesn't have a single regret about it.

Chung cut his teeth as a professional during his three years with Pacific FC before signing with TFC ahead of last season, joining a small handful of players who made the jump from the Canadian Premier League to MLS.

Chung, a 24-year-old from Port Coquitlam, B.C., hit the ground running with Toronto. He made his league debut in the second week of the 2022 campaign and earned his first start in the following game. In total, the right fullback made eight appearances - five as a starter - through the Reds’ opening 11 matches of the MLS season.

Then a calf injury suffered in May sidelined him for several weeks. He ended up playing in the COVID-delayed 2020 Canadian Championship final against Forge FC on June 3. But that was his last appearance for Toronto. Chung spent the bulk of the remainder of the season on loan at TFC 2 in the MLS NEXT Pro.

This past February, Toronto FC and Chung came to a mutual agreement to terminate his contract even though he was signed through 2023 with club options for 2024 and 2025. Shortly after, Chung signed with Vancouver FC, the CPL's newest expansion franchise that will make its league debut in 2023.

In this one-on-one interview with TFC Republic, Chung discussed how and why he parted company with Toronto FC, his lack of playing time with the Reds, his return to the CPL with Vancouver FC, and much more.
