Toronto FC in a good spot to make summer roster moves if needed

TFC won't be handcuffed during this summer's transfer window from a salary cap perspective, according to GM Jason Hernandez.

With the MLS primary transfer window now closed, Jason Hernandez can finally catch his breath.

It’s been a busy nine months for the GM of Toronto FC, starting with last summer’s contract buyouts of Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi and the signing of Djordje Mihailovic, and culminating with the recent addition of DP forward Josh Sargent.

In between there have been a number of other important moves that have been made to bolster the Reds’ roster, as well as some key exits, most notably goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

TFC began the 2026 MLS season with back-to-back road losses before rebounding by going unbeaten in their last three outings with two wins, including a 2-1 decision over the Columbus Crew. Toronto (2-2-1) is in far better place after its first five games compared to last year when it earned just one point and it took until April 9, its ninth match of the campaign, to record its first win.
