The Canadian women’s team not only managed to change the colour of the medal, they also struck gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
After playing to a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of regulation and extra time, Canada outlasted Sweden 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout to win Friday’s gold medal game at Yokohama Stadium.
Julia Grosso scored the winning penalty in a sudden-death situation, while goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé made two penalty saves to turn away the Swedes’ challenge.
After winning back-to-back bronze medals at London 2012 and Rio 2016, Canada are Olympic champions, and Christine Sinclair finally has her gold medal.
