Feb. 17, 2026: Raheem Edwards returns to Toronto FC

Toronto FC claimed left fullback Raheem Edwards off waivers from the New York Red Bulls.

Quick analysis: This is an interesting move that sees Raheem Edwards return to Toronto FC after a lengthy absence.

"We are very happy to welcome Raheem back to Toronto. As a GTA native, Raheem will represent our club with the fire and competitiveness that our supporters expect. He will bolster our defensive personnel and push the demands within the group every day," GM Jason Hernandez said in a media release.

This is a solid depth move by TFC, as Edwards, a 30-year-old from Toronto, will be entering his 10th MLS season in 2026 and has 205 regular season and playoff games under his belt.

Edwards spent time with TFC 2 and debuted for Toronto FC in 2016 before signing an MLS contract the following year, becoming the 14th player in club history to graduate to the first team from the youth academy.

The speedy fullback had one goal and six assists in 21 regular season appearances in 2017, while also winning an MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield and the Canadian Championship with the Reds.

He looked to have a bright future ahead of him with Toronto, but just days after winning the MLS Cup, he was selected by LAFC in the 2017 Expansion Draft and was then immediately traded to the Montreal Impact (now known as CF Montreal). In total, Edwards had one goal and eight assists in 27 appearances in all competitions for Toronto.

The Canadian has bounced around the league quite a bit since leaving Montreal in the summer of 2018, as he had stints with the Chicago Fire, Minnesota United, LAFC and LA Galaxy before returning to Montreal. He spent the 2025 MLS season with the Red Bulls, chipping in with two assists in 24 league appearances, while earning $414,340 US. Edwards became expendable when the Red Bulls acquired Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty in a trade with Montreal last week.

The Red Bulls waived and exercised a contract buyout of Edwards, which more than likely means that Toronto was able to sign the Canadian fullback to a less expensive contract compared to what he was making last year.

Toronto previously signed Matheus Pereira from Portuguese side Clube Desportivo Santa Clara through the 2027-28 MLS season, with a club option for 2028-29. Edwards looks to be a backup option for the Brazilian left back, but he should see fairly regular action under Robin Fraser given his experience in MLS.
