The addition of the Hungarian winger/striker should give a big boost to a Toronto FC side that struggled to score last season.

Feb. 19, 2026: Toronto closing in on Dániel Sallói

Toronto FC is finalizing a deal to acquire winger Dániel Sallói as part of a trade with Sporting KC, a source confirmed TFC Republic. The Athletic's Tom Bogart is reporting that the deal is for $300,000 US in general allocation money (plus $700,000 in GAM in add-ons), and that Sallói will not be a designated player for Toronto.

Quick analysis: While it would have been preferable for Toronto FC to have made such a move to bolster its attack much earlier this off-season, it's better late than never and Sallói is a very solid pickup.

Sallói, a 29-year-old from Hungary, is a proven MLS attacker with plenty of experience and who can play either as a winger or as a striker. He boasts speed, dynamism in attack and finishing ability, and is exactly the type of player profile the Reds desperately need.

While signing a DP forward remains a top priority for TFC – they continue to talk to Norwich City about a transfer move for U.S. international Josh Sargent – they also required a TAM-level attacker to bolster its offensive fortunes after scoring only 37 goals in MLS last year (third worst in the league).

Sallói should be able to help on that front. Over the course of nine seasons, the Hungarian scored 67 goals and tallied 43 assists in 286 appearances in all competitions. His best campaign came in 2021 when he posted career highs in goals (16) and assists (eight). He was also an MLS All-Star and was named a finalist for the Landon Donovan MLS MVP award that year.

Since then, his production has dropped off, with seven goals in three of his previous four years (two in 2024), including last season when he bagged seven goals and added four assists.

Until a DP forward is brought in, Sallói will more than likely act as the team's starting striker. Sallói has been involved in training camp for Kansas City and played in pre-season games, so he should be able to hit the ground running for TFC once the deal is completed and he arrives in town.

Sallói earned a U.S. green card in 2019 which means he will count as a domestic player on TFC's roster and will not take up a valuable international roster slot.

He earned $1,300,000 US last year and was under contract to Kansas City through to the end of 2026, so Toronto would have to re-sign him to a new deal ahead of next year or potentially lose him to MLS free agency.

He has been capped four times by Hungary since making his international debut in 2021.
