Javier Perez is now officially on the clock.
Toronto FC removed the interim tag from Perez’s job title earlier this week when it announced the 44-year-old Spaniard will remain as the club’s coach for the remainder of 2021.
Hired in February as an assistant on Chris Armas' staff, Perez took over the head coaching duties on an interim basis on July 4 after Armas was fired. Toronto was dead last in MLS with a 1-8-2 record and mired in a seven-game winless run (six losses) at the time, so the club wisely cut bait with Armas and started over with Perez in an attempt to salvage the season.
Currently, TFC sits at the bottom of the 27-team league table, and is nine points out of a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. There are six teams the Reds have to leapfrog to catch up with the Columbus Crew, who hold down the seventh and last playoff spot in the East.
