Canada sweeps friendly series vs. Haiti with win in Montreal

The Canadians won their fifth game in seven outings under coach Casey Stoney with a hard-fought display on Tuesday.

Canada sweeps friendly series vs. Haiti with win in Montreal
  • Canada 3 (Viens 16, 42; Ward 23’), Haiti 1 (Dumornay’ 45’+2’)
  • Zara Chavoshi earns 1st cap; Holly Ward scores 1st goal in 1st start
  • Canada has won all 5 games vs. Haiti by combined score of 26-3

Montreal is home to a population of 120,000 Haitians, constituting the largest diaspora outside of the Caribbean nation.

Small wonder that Tuesday’s international friendly at Stade Saputo before 18,321 spectators between the Canadian women’s team and Haiti felt like a road game for hosts. Still, the Canadians paid no mind to the rowdy and largely pro-Haitian crowd in attendance as they earned a 3-1 win to sweep their two-game series vs Haiti.

Evelyne Viens bagged a brace and Holly Ward recorded her first goal and first assist for Canada who has a record of five wins, one loss and one draw since Casey Stoney took over as coach in January. Captain Jessie Fleming had a pair of assists in the win.

"I thought it was brilliant in terms of the atmosphere, what the fans brought,” Stoney said. “It was not in our favour, but at the same time, it just shows how beautifully diverse this country is.”
