It’s been far from smooth sailing for Zane Monlouis since he came to MLS.

Toronto FC signed Monlouis last February from Premier League outfit Arsenal on a two-year deal through 2026 with options for 2027 and 2028 in a move that gave the English defender an opportunity to finally kickstart his club career.

Monlouis joined Arsenal's youth academy in May 2012 and went on to sign his first professional contract with the Gunners in October 2020. In total, he made 99 appearances with Arsenal's under-18, under-21 and under-23 teams, scoring three goals for the 18s and captaining the 21s.

But he failed to make a single appearance for Arsenal at senior level in all of that time. The closest he came was being included in the Gunners' matchday squad for a pair of UEFA Champions League matches in late 2024 vs. Shakhtar Donetsk and vs. AS Monaco. He was an unused substitute in both contests. He also had a brief loan spell with League One side Reading in 2024, making a single appearance for their senior side and one appearance for their under-21 team.
