Vanessa Gilles back in the fold for Canada after injury layoff
The veteran centre back missed last month's international window due to a leg injury she suffered while playing for Bayern Munich.
Defender Vanessa Gilles will be back for the Canadian women’s team later this month after missing out on October’s international window through injury.
Coach Casey Stoney’s latest Canadian roster was released on Friday and among the 23 players selected for duty is Gilles, who picked up a muscle injury in her lower leg in a match while playing for her pro club Bayern Munich.
The injury meant Gilles, a 29-year-old from Ottawa, was ruled out for Canada for its international friendlies away to Switzerland and the Netherlands (both 1-0 losses) in October. But Gilles has recovered and is expected to feature for Canada when it faces Japan in a pair of friendlies on Nov. 29 and Dec. 2 in Nagasaki.
Gilles joined Bayern Munich in May after spending last season on loan at French side Olympique Lyon from NWSL club Angel City. The Canadian defender hit the ground running in Germany by scoring three goals in six appearances in all competitions before getting injured in a DFB Cup match at Borussia Dortmund on Sept. 29.
