No playoffs for TFC 2, but plenty of player progression for youngsters
Qualifying for the playoffs was a goal for 2025. But TFC 2's main focus remains on developing players and filtering them into the first team.
A 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season that began with promise for TFC 2 ended in the most heartbreaking fashion.
The Young Reds opened their campaign with an impressive road victory over FC Cincinnati 2, and ended up taking 11 out of a possible 18 points. A summer run of games that saw TFC 2 win four out of six matches (with one draw) put them in pole position to clinch a playoff berth for just the second time in their history.
But things fell apart as Toronto lost three of its final four games in regulation time, including a 2-1 decision away to New York Red Bulls 2 on the last day of the season. Had Toronto won that match or even earned a point via a penalty shootout defeat, it would’ve qualified for the post-season. Instead, they missed out by a single point.
“Obviously, it's not how we thought the season was gonna end. I was hoping to be playing [in the playoffs]. But that's kind of how life goes. Sometimes it doesn't go as you envision it,” TFC midfielder Michael Sullivan said.
