State of the union: TFC left scarred after disastrous campaign

A 2-0 loss to Orlando City at BMO Field last Saturday drew Toronto FC’s nightmarish 2023 MLS season to a merciful end.

And not a moment too soon according to newly installed coach John Herdman, who marked his debut for the Reds by overseeing the club’s seventh consecutive defeat.

“They are beaten down. That's a reality. There’s players there that are just low on confidence… There's just been a lot of change, trauma, defeat after defeat after defeat, having to read on social media the hate or the frustration. That takes its toll,” Herdman said of his players.

He later added: “I honestly think they need a full stop and allow this snow globe to settle in their minds… They need time, some of them, to maybe go into some therapy.”
