Missing three fourths of its starting back line and with its head coach suspended, Toronto FC managed to put in one of its best defensive performances of the season on Saturday to give its playoff hopes a major boost.

TFC benefited from an early own-goal and a timely late strike by substitute Dániel Sallói in posting a crucial 2-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Coach Robin Fraser wasn’t on the touchline as he was serving a one-game suspension due to yellow card accumulation. Fraser watched from the stands as assistant coach Wolde Harris took charge of TFC from the bench, guiding them to only their third road win of the campaign.

The Reds expertly locked things down against New York after failing to keep a clean sheet in their previous 13 outings. In earning their first shutout since July 25, TFC also ended a 14-match winless skid (nine losses) vs. New York with their previous win over the Red Bulls coming in 2019.
