Canada suffers 3rd straight shutout loss in defeat to Netherlands
The Canadian women’s team produced very little attacking quality in Tuesday’s setback in Nijmegen.
- Canada 0, Netherlands 1 (Wilms 28’)
- Canada loses 3rd game in row for 1st time since 2019
- Ashley Lawrence earns 150th cap, 4 out of 6th place
It would appear that Canadian women’s coach Casey Stoney has some work to do ahead of next year’s World Cup qualifiers.
Canada closed out a poor October window with a 1-0 defeat to the Netherlands in Tuesday’s international friendly at the Goffertstadion in Nijmegen. The shutout loss was the second in five days for the Canadians, who are ranked No. 9 in the world by FIFA and could fall out of the top 10 when the next rankings are published.
The defeat was also the third in a row for Canada (all clean sheets), its longest losing streak since dropping four in a row from June 20 to Nov. 7, 2019, when Kenneth Heiner-Møller was the coach. Ranked No. 11 in the world, the Netherlands snapped a three-game winless skid and won for the first time in two outings under new coach Arjan Veurink.
After a disappointing showing in last week’s 1-0 loss to Switzerland, Stoney’s team looked just as apathetic against the Netherlands, lacking urgency in attack and being far too sloppy in possession in its end of the pitch.
