Desperate state of affairs for TFC as season enters final stretch
Self-belief is a valuable commodity. But so is self-awareness. Toronto FC appears devoid of that particular attribute right now.
ST. LOUIS – Time is beginning to run out for Toronto FC.
After lingering near the very bottom of the Eastern Conference table for most of the regular season, TFC climbed back into the playoff race following a successful summer spell thanks to an impressive seven-game unbeaten run that included wins over Inter Miami (the reigning MLS Cup champions) and Nashville SC (the current Supporters’ Shield leaders).
The Reds appeared to have turned a corner, but old habits die hard. They have taken a backwards step in recent weeks by losing two in a row, their latest setback coming in a humbling 3-1 defeat to St. Louis City SC at Energizer Park on Saturday night.
With the three teams directly above them dropping points this weekend, TFC wasted a golden opportunity to put themselves within touching distance of the playoff line in the Eastern Conference. Instead, they remain in 12th, three places and three points behind New York City FC who occupy the ninth and final playoff spot in the East.
