TFC Flashback: Torsten Frings falls flat in MLS

In this special video blog series for TFC Republic, I look back at former Toronto FC players and examine their time with the Reds. This week we'll talk about midfielder Torsten Frings, who played for TFC from 2011 to 2012.

German international and Bundesliga star Torsten Frings signed with Toronto FC as a Designated Player in the summer of 2011 in a move that caught a lot of attention around MLS at the time.

The hope was that the veteran midfielder would help turn thing around at TFC - they still hadn't qualified for the playoffs since coming in the league in 2007. But things didn't quite work out, as Frings had seen his best days already pass him by, while he also suffered through injuries during his time with the Reds.

Nevertheless, his arrival in Toronto was an important moment in club history, and set the team forth on a path in which it went after and signed a number of other high-profile players from top European clubs.
