One of the more interesting moves made by GM Jason Hernandez happened over the summer when Toronto FC sent Ayo Akinola on loan to the San Jose Earthquakes for the remainder of the 2023 MLS season.

Akinola was given a chance to rekindle his career in San Jose, but things didn't work out for the young forward as he barely featured for the club. The Earthquakes declined their option to exercise a permanent transfer for Akinola at the end of his loan, and he returned to Toronto where he is under contract through 2024 with an option for 2025.
