Feb. 22, 2024: Reds ink Ranjitsingh to short-term deal

Toronto FC signed goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh to a new contract through 2024 with an option for 2025.

Quick analysis: This move hardly came out of the blue as coach John Herdman told reporters last month that Ranjitsingh, who spent pre-season training camp with the Reds, would be back this season.

In early 20222, TFC signed Ranjitsingh through 2023, with an option for 2024. The third-string goalkeeper only made his debut for Toronto last June 21 when both Sean Johnson and Tomás Romero were away on international duty. Ranjitsingh ended up playing in four MLS games (all of them losses) last season and failed to impress as he gave up 10 goals.

At the end of the year, Toronto declined its 2024 contract option for Ranjitsingh, a 30-year-old native of Scarborough, Ont., who earned $100,167 US in 2023. The fact that the Reds are bringing him back suggests that Ranjitsingh signed a new deal that included a pay cut.

This is nothing more than a depth signing. With Sean Johnson firmly established as the club's starter, and the late-season emergence in 2023 of former TFC 2 goalkeeper Luka Gavran, Ranjitsingh will once again serve as Toronto's third-string option this coming season.
