The Josh Sargent gamble: Is it worth it for Toronto FC?
On paper, this looks to be a home run signing for TFC. But there are no guarantees despite the huge investment made by the Reds.
Needing to revamp an attack that ranked among the worst in MLS last year, Toronto FC swung for the fences when it went after Josh Sargent.
After lengthy negotiations, TFC finally got their man last week when they finalized a transfer with Norwich City for the services of the American forward.
Looking at Sargent’s resume, it’s not difficult why Toronto so doggedly pursued Sargent. The U.S. international tallied 15 goals and nine assists in 83 games across all competitions for German club Werder Bremen and followed that up with another 56 goals and 15 assists in 157 appearances for Norwich.
He bagged 13 goals in 2022-23, and he followed that up with his best campaign in 2023-24 when he netted 16 times. In 2024-25, he scored 15 goals and was named to the Championship's team of the season.
