Toronto FC part company with Insigne, Bernardeschi

It’s a Canada Day bombshell from Toronto FC.

TFC have agreed to mutual contract terminations with Italian DPs Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi.

Insigne, 34, was the second-highest player in MLS this season (behind Lionel Messi's $20.5 million), making $15.4 million US. His deal with TFC was scheduled to run out at the end of next June with an option for the remainder of the year. Bernardeschi, 31, was under contract through the end of 2026 (with options through 2028), and was making $6,295,381 US this year (sixth-best in MLS).

Insigne’s $15.4 million salary is more than the total roster payroll of nine MLS teams. Combined, the Italians’ salaries are greater than 23 clubs across the league.
