July 1, 2026: Reds finalizing trade for Nelson Palacio

Sources have confirmed to TFC Republic that Toronto FC is very close to completing a trade with Real Salt Lake for Colombian midfielder Nelson Palacio, would be a U22 Initiative player for the Reds. News of the deal was first reported by Argentina-based journalist César Luis Merlo, who says the deal is for $1.2 million plus add-ons and a percentage of a future sale.

Quick analysis: With José Cifuentes out of the picture, Toronto FC had a hole in its midfield and decided to plug it with Nelson Palacio, who is more of a traditional defensive midfielder than the Ecuadorian.

It's interesting that GM Jason Hernandez decided to go this route and pick up a player of Palacio's profile, rather than going for a like-for-like replacement for Cifuentes. Then again, the back line has been leaking goals this season – 29 goals conceded through 14 games – so it needs all the help and support it can get.
