July 6, 2026: Reds finalize trade for Nelson Palacio

Toronto FC acquired midfielder Nelson Palacio in a cash-for-player trade from Real Salt Lake, in exchange for $1.1 million US and up to $550,000 in conditional cash if certain performance-based metrics are met. Additionally, Real Salt Lake will retain a sell-on percentage if the player is traded or sold via transfer. Palacio will occupy a U-22 Initiative roster slot during the 2026 MLS season, and will be added to the club’s roster pending the receipt of his medicals and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

Quick analysis: With José Cifuentes out of the picture, Toronto FC had a hole in its midfield and decided to plug it with Nelson Palacio, who is more of a traditional defensive midfielder than the Ecuadorian.

It's interesting that GM Jason Hernandez decided to go this route and pick up a player of Palacio's profile, rather than going for a like-for-like replacement for Cifuentes. Then again, the back line has been leaking goals this season – 29 goals conceded through 14 games – so it needs all the help and support it can get.
