You go to a soccer game and a street fight breaks out.
Canada overcame an ultra-physical and cynical El Salvador to earn a 2-0 victory in Concacaf Gold Cup action on Tuesday at Houston's Shell Energy Stadium.
After El Salvador had two players sent off before halftime, Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan scored in the second half for Canada who clinched a berth in the quarter-finals with the win in its group stage finale. It's the fifth time in a row that the Canadians have qualified for the knockout round at the Gold Cup.
Canada finished in first place in Group B with seven points, ahead of Honduras (six points), Curaçao (two points) and El Salvador (one point). Honduras beat Curaçao 2-1 in San Jose on Tuesday. The Canadians will meet Group C runners-up Guatemala in the quarter-finals on Sunday in Minneapolis, and could face the United States in the semifinals next week.
