VANCOUVER – It was there for the taking by the Canadian men’s team.

Needing only a draw to secure first place in Group B and ensure a third consecutive World Cup match in Vancouver, Canada was outplayed and outclassed in a 2-1 loss to Switzerland before a sellout crowd of 52,497 at BC Place on Wednesday.

Promise David came off the bench in the second half to score for Canada who showed plenty of fight after going down by a pair of goals but fell just short of recording what would’ve been a massively important result.

Instead of contesting their round of 32 match at BC Place on July 2 (and possibly a round of 16 game on July 7), Les Rouges have lost home field advantage and won’t play on home soil again at this tournament. Their first ever World Cup knockout match will take place in Los Angeles on June 28 vs. the Group A runner-up.
