For someone who has seen limited action in Major League Soccer over the past three and half seasons, Liam Fraser has clearly earned the trust of Canadian men’s team coach John Herdman.

How else to explain Herdman calling up the Toronto FC midfielder for international duty for Canada at this summer’s Concacaf Gold Cup, and again for the Reds’ trio of crucial World Cup qualifiers this month?

Currently on loan with the Columbus Crew, Fraser could pick up his 10th cap on Wednesday when Canada hosts El Salvador at BMO Field, thus allowing him to continue his international development. Fraser started in Canada’s 7-0 win over Aruba in a World Cup qualifying match in June, and then made four more appearances at the Gold Cup the following month.

For Fraser, it was a welcome return to the national team after a 16-month absence, largely brought on by the global pandemic.
