What is it about Newcastle United youth academy products who score spectacular goals in their Premier League home debuts for the Magpies against Manchester United?

After playing his first game for Newcastle on Boxing Day 2006 away to Bolton Wanderers, a 19-year-old David Edgar earned his first start at home on New Year’s Day against Alex Ferguson's club. Deployed as a left fullback, the future Canadian international put in a man-of-the-match performance as he effectively marked Cristiano Ronaldo, while also taking a pass from teammate James Milner and scoring a screamer from 40 yards out that beat goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar at the far post to level the score.

In fairness, Edgar’s long-range attempt took a slight, fortuitous deflection off United’s Paul Scholes. But it was a highlight-reel goal that still gets talked about by Newcastle fans to this day.
