Toronto FC 0-2 to start the season after loss in Vancouver

Any lingering doubts about Toronto FC being a work in progress even after all its recent signings were erased on Saturday night.

TFC suffered a mauling at the hands of the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place, coming out on the wrong end of a humbling 3-0 loss in the latest edition of this version of the Canadian derby.

Thomas Müller bagged a brace for the Whitecaps who scored three set piece goals in the first half to hand Toronto its second consecutive loss to open the 2026 MLS regular season.

TFC prided themselves on being a tough team to beat during the latter half of last season while finishing with one of the best defensive records in the league. So far, this year’s version of the team bears no resemblance to that one as they’ve coughed up six goals and have looked second best across both of their matches.

"I’m probably mostly disappointed with the fact that we look so tentative in the beginning of the game. I thought with the ball, we just didn't look as confident as we needed to, and [that] led to a lot of turnovers. And we certainly feel like when we play well and we're engaged that we have the ability to play through teams and make it difficult for them," coach Robin Fraser told reporters after the game.

Second-half substitute Raheem Edwards laid the brutal bare when asked by TFC Republic about the team's performance on the night.

"Honestly, I feel embarrassed to be up here to talk to you guys. I feel sorry for the [TFC travelling] fans. I just want to apologize to them, because that first half was unacceptable. More of the same thing again in terms of shooting ourselves in the foot, giving up easy goals. It's a little too easy," Edwards stated.

Josh Sargent to be introduced on Wednesday

Toronto FC announced last Friday it reached a transfer agreement to sign forward Josh Sargent from English club Norwich City FC. Sargent joins TFC as a Designated Player through the 2030-31 MLS season.

TFC acquired St. Louis City SC’s right of first refusal for Sargent in exchange for $500,000 in general allocation money (GAM) – $250,000 in 2026 GAM and $250,000 in 2027 GAM – and up to an additional $225,000 in conditional GAM if certain performance-based metrics are met. He will be added to TFC’s roster, pending a medical and receipt of his work permit and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

Norwich had declined Toronto’s original $18 million US bid, feeling that the MLS club's offer didn't meet its evaluation of Sargent, who was under contract through 2028. The Athletic's Tom Bogart is reporting that Norwich and Toronto finally came to terms on a fee in the neighbourhood of $22 million US. That would make it the third largest transfer fee ever paid by an MLS club, behind only Son Heung-min ($26.5 million, LAFC) and Emmanuel Latte Lath ($22 million, Atlanta United).

“We are thrilled to welcome Josh to Toronto FC as a foundational piece of what we have been building here at the club since last summer. He brings high-level experience in some of the strongest leagues in the world and international pedigree at just 26 years old. He is a proven goalscorer, with a winning mentality and the intelligence that will lead our attack for years to come," GM Jason Hernandez said in a media release.

Hernandez said at the conclusion of the campaign that securing a DP attacker would be a top priority ahead of the 2026 MLS season. Sargent fits that bill as he had 56 goals in 157 games for Norwich since joining the club in 2021.

Make no mistake about it, Sargent will immediately become the focal point of Toronto FC alongside Djordje Mihailovic. MLSE has spent big money to bring both players to the club, and they want to see a return on their investment. That means, at the very least, a playoff appearance for the Reds in 2026.

“Josh Sargent is a world-class player and person, and his addition marks an important step forward in our work to deliver a second MLS Cup championship to our supporters and city. Today is a very good day for Toronto FC and its supporters, but we know that today is just one step in the process. There is much work still to do,” Keith Pelley, MLSE President & CEO, said in a media release.

Theo Corbeanu sidelined after knee surgery

Toronto FC will have to make do without the services of injured winger Theo Corbeanu for the time being. But for exactly how long remains anybody’s guess.

Coach Robin Fraser confirmed last Thursday that Corbeanu underwent knee surgery this week. Fraser previously revealed that Corbeanu had surgery earlier this off-season.

“My understanding is [this week's surgery] went really well. I don't know the details of what the exact surgery was, but it was an issue that he was having since the off-season that we tried to manage as well as we could. And it just got to a point where it seemed that the suggestion was that was the best route to go,” Fraser said.

Fraser declined to offer a timeline as to when Corbeanu might be able to return to action.

“I don't want to speculate and be wrong, but it certainly won't be a week or two. It'll be slightly longer than that,” Fraser said.

Corbeanu, a 25-year-old from Hamilton, Ont., didn’t play in any pre-season games in Spain, but has been involved in parts of training with the club, including as recently as last week. His previous appearance for Toronto came in its 4-2 home win over Orlando City on the final day of the 2026 season when he notched an assist.

The Canadian international joined TFC via a loan deal from Spanish club Granada CF people to the start of the 2025 MLS campaign and ended up scoring a team-high six goals while tallying two assists in 32 league appearances (24 starts). Toronto thought enough of him that they signed him on a permanent basis at the end of year.

TFC vs. FC Cincinnati on Sunday

Toronto FC wraps up its three-game road trip to open the season when it faces FC Cincinnati on Sunday (7:00 p.m. ET/Apple TV).

Cincinnati is coming off a 1-0 loss away to Minnesota United on the weekend after opening its 2026 MLS campaign with a 2-0 home win over Atlanta United.

Kelvin Yeboah’s goal for Minnesota in the 66th minute off a rebound was the difference in the game.

“I just think in our actions and our decisions to goal, there wasn't enough there on the night. So, you could say it's a missed opportunity, but I don't think we performed so well that you think you missed out on three points,” Cincinnati coach Pat Noonan said.

Cincinnati leads the all-time regular season series against Toronto with nine wins (one draw) in 14 meetings. TFC are winless in eight consecutive MLS matches against Cincinnati (seven loss) and sport a 2-4-1 road record vs. the Orange and Blue. Toronto's previous win in Cincinnati came in 2020.

Note: I will be at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati to cover Sunday's game, so be sure to visit TFC Republic all weekend in order to check out our special on-site coverage.
