TFC benefitting from Dániel Sallói's direct style of play

Robin Fraser praised Sallói for “a level of directness, a level of desire to get to goal” that he's brought to Toronto FC's attack.

CINCINNATI – It was a goal that owed as much to Dániel Sallói’s directness as it did to the impeccable timing of his run.

A tightly contested affair that was knotted at 0-0 was broken open when Sallói slipped in behind FC Cincinnati’s defence and scored a late winner to lift TFC to a dramatic 1-0 victory at TQL Stadium on Sunday night.

The goal was Sallói’s first for the Reds who closed out a tough three-match road swing to open their campaign with their first win in Cincinnati in seven years. Sallói put in a man-of-the match effort with two shots and a key assist (a pass that directly leads to a shot on goal by a teammate but not a goal) and an impressive 88.5 pass completion rate.

But his best moment came in the 86th minute when he peeled off the wing, beat Cincinnati’s offside trap and latched onto a gorgeous through ball played out of TFC’s half by Richie Laryea. Once Sallói was in behind, the Hungarian took a few touches before beating goalkeeper Roman Celentano with a composed finish from inside the penalty area.
