No playoffs for Toronto FC after digging itself too deep of a hole

Toronto FC showed some life down the season stretch, but an injury-marred first half of the campaign helped do them in.

It seemed inevitable.

Toronto FC earned a reputation as a comeback specialist this season by scoring goals in the 80th minute and beyond on 11 separate games to turn losses into draws and draws into wins, thus staying in the thick of the playoff race in the home stretch of the MLS campaign.

Resilience is a wonderful character trait for any team to have, especially in a league as physically demanding as MLS. But you can only rely on resilience for so long. Eventually, the well runs dry. And you just had to have known that when TFC conceded twice before halftime on Sunday that there’d be no come-from-behind result this time around.

And so it came to pass, as the Reds suffered a humbling 3-1 loss to Atlanta United FC, a defeat that officially knocked them out of playoff contention in the penultimate week of the regular season.
