Hugo Mbongue: CPL loan was to show 'I am good enough' for TFC
In a 1-on-1 interview, the young forward discusses his loan with the CPL's Vancouver FC, his future with Toronto FC, and more.
After laying low for so long, Toronto FC forward Hugo Mbongue finally announced himself with a solid 2025 campaign while on loan in the Canadian Premier League.
Mbongue, 21, was loaned out to Lexington SC in March and the hope was that he'd get the chance to prove himself and earn regular playing time in the USL Championship.
Suffice to say that didn't happen. The Toronto native made just eight substitute appearances (106 total minutes) across all competitions for Lexington before being recalled by TFC in July and then being immediately loaned out to Vancouver FC.
Loans are nothing new for Mbongue. He spent 2024 with San Antonio FC where he scored three goals and had one assist through 21 appearances during the USL Championship season. But Mbongue's loan spell in the CPL was different as he finally came out of his shell and produced by scoring seven goals and adding two assists in 15 appearances in all competitions.
