This is the second installment of a new semi-regular feature series at TFC Republic where we will speak to an Apple TV commentator about the current state of Toronto FC.

This week: Dax McCarty, a former MLS veteran and U.S. international, talks about why he is cautiously optimistic about Toronto FC this season, why the injury loss of Djordje Mihailovic is a big blow for the clubs, and much more.

This Q&A has been lightly edited and trimmed for brevity and clarity.

What have you've seen from Toronto FC through its first seven games of the season?

My general thoughts on Toronto FC is they are definitely an improvement from last year, which I think the bar was pretty low. I'd like to describe myself towards Toronto FC as cautiously optimistic. Without question, they are in the most important part of their season right now, going through nine consecutive home games. When you have nine consecutive home games, you have to accumulate points. And so, they've done a pretty good job up to this point. Four games into this [homestand] they've got eight points, but honestly, if I'm Robin Fraser, I'd be a little frustrated that that isn't 12 points. Because if you look at the ways that they have dropped points in each draw, I'd be really frustrated, and I'd be looking at that as two points dropped rather than a point gained.
