Canada vs. Suriname in World Cup qualifying: What you need to know

It’s getting very serious for the Canadian men’s team.

John Herdman’s side is on the verge of moving on to the second round of the Concacaf qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. All that stands in their way is Suriname.

Canada, No. 70 in the FIFA world rankings, enters its final first round match as the strong favourite against Suriname (No. 136). But the Surinamese should provide Canada with its stiffest test of the qualifiers thus far - the Reds have won their opening three games by a combined score of 23-1 and have never trailed. Suriname has been equally ruthless in Group B, posting a trio of shutout wins and outscoring their opponents 15-0.

The only other previous contest between these nations came on Oct. 12, 1977 when Canada earned a 2-1 win in a World Cup qualifier. Mike Bakić scored the winning goal.

Here’s what you need to know about Tuesday’s game (9:00 p.m. ET) between Canada and Suriname at SeatGeek Stadium, in Bridgeview, Ill.
