TFC gets $425,000 in GAM from LA Galaxy
Toronto FC announced on Friday it acquired $425,000 US in general allocation money (GAM) – $200,000 in 2026 GAM and $225,000 in 2027 GAM – from the LA Galaxy in exchange for a 2026 international roster slot.
This trade continues TFC's trend of stockpiling GAM in exchange for international roster slots started by GM Jason Hernandez last summer.
It also appears to be part of the new direction in terms of Hernandez's approach to roster building, relying more on MLS experienced players and less on players from abroad.
There are exceptions, of course, as the transfer for U.S. international Josh Sargent from English club Josh Sargent runs contrary to this philosophy. But overall, it appears the Reds are attempting to get back to the top of the hill in MLS by filling their squad with players who have experience in the league.
MLS rules can be complicated to understand but put in its simplest terms, GAM is essentially extra room on top of a team's normal salary cap (which is $6,425,000 in 2026). If a team maxes out its salary cap, it can still spend on new players if it has accumulated any GAM. So, you can think of GAM as a tool to extend a club's salary cap position.
Clubs can use GAM, among other ways, to buy down a player’s salary cap hit, which in turn allows them to go after new players.
