VANCOUVER – It was a World Cup victory 40 years in the making, and boy was it ever worth the wait for long-suffering Canadian soccer supporters.

With Prime Minister Mark Carney and FIFA president Gianni Infantino in attendance, the Canadian men’s team put on a show in earning a rampaging 6-0 win over Qatar before a crowd of 52,497 at BC Place on Thursday.

It was a first ever World Cup victory for the Canadian men who lost six of their previous seven matches across three appearances dating back to their tournament debut in 1986. While this result doesn’t officially mean Canada has advanced out of Group B, its place in the round of 32 is virtually assured.

Jonathan David bagged a hat trick, and Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also scored for Canada in a dominant display against Qatar who had two players red carded in the 33rd and 54th minute and scored an own goal. The second red came with Qatar down by four goals and saw Assim Madibo expelled for a pure horror tackle on Ismaël Koné that sent the Canadian midfielder back to the locker room on a stretcher with a broken leg.
