Ex-TFC prospect Julian Altobelli gets new lease on life in CPL

"I think at the end of last year with Toronto FC, I felt I deserved more, and it kind of sparked a little fire in me," Altobelli told TFC Republic.

Ex-TFC prospect Julian Altobelli gets new lease on life in CPL

Julian Altobelli is enjoying his moment in the sun in the Canadian Premier League.

Following a breakout campaign with TFC 2 in MLS NEXT Pro last year, the 22-year-old attacker parted company with the organization in the off-season after failing to earn a chance at a contract with Toronto FC.

Looking for a new challenge, Altobelli signed with York United in January, and it's fair to say the change of scenery has done him a world of good. Altobelli has nine goals and one assist in 12 games in all competitions for York, establishing himself as one of the CPL's top newcomers in 2025.

It's a redemption story for Altobelli, who cut his teeth in TFC's youth academy before signing his first pro contract with York9 FC (now York United) as a 17-year-old in 2o2o. Things didn’t work out for Altobelli in his first run in the CPL. He only lasted one season and didn’t play a single game at the Island Games in P.E.I. before York9 granted his request to be released from his contract at the end of the year.

Now he's back at York after a fantastic final campaign with TFC 2 in 2024.

In this one-on-one interview with TFC Republic, Altobelli discusses his hot start with York United, his time with TFC 2, not getting a chance with Toronto FC and much more.
