Will 1st Canada caps lead to more chances with Toronto FC for Richard Chukwu?

Jesse Marsch argues that TFC's modus operandi has been to sign star players, rather than developing homegrown talents.

If Jesse Marsch had his way, Richard Chukwu would be playing a lot more often for Toronto FC.

But as it stands, Chukwu, an 18-year-old defender from Bradford, Ont., has made more appearances with the Canadian men’s team (two) than he has with TFC (one) in 2026, his first year as an MLS player.

Chukwu earned his first cap for Canada when he was subbed on late in a 1-0 win over Chile at BMO Field on Sept. 26 before making his first start for Les Rouges in last Saturday's 2-0 victory against Peru in Montreal.

The young defender barely put a foot wrong in his 65 minutes on the pitch, making three defensive clearances and an interception, while playing on the left side of a back four that included Niko Sigur, Luc de Fougerolles and Ralph Priso.
