Toronto FC falls short in Canadian Championship final
TFC outplayed the Vancouver Whitecaps but came out on the wrong end of penalty shootout loss on Wednesday at BC Place.
- Toronto FC 0, Vancouver Whitecaps 0
- TFC loses 4-2 in penalty shootout after goalless draw in 90 minutes of regulation
- Reds forward Deandre Kerr finished as this year’s top scorer with five goals
The winners and still Canadian champions: The Vancouver Whitecaps.
Toronto FC put forth a valiant effort in Wednesday’s Canadian Championship final at BC Place, but paid for not making the most of its goal-scoring opportunities in regulation time.
After the teams battled to a goalless draw at the end of 90 minutes, Vancouver won the ensuing penalty shootout 4-2 to claim its third consecutive Canadian Championship title. Prince Owusu and captain Jonathan Osorio scored for TFC, while Kosi Thompson saw his shot saved and Matty Longstaff blasted his attempt off the crossbar. Sean Johnson made one stop in the shootout, but had no chance on Bjørn Inge Utvik’s successful attempt that sealed the win for the home side.
TFC will be kicking themselves after this one as they looked the far more dangerous side on the night, even as Italian DP Lorenzo Insigne put in another lacklustre performance. Whitecaps goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer was absolutely outstanding on the night, making seven saves in a man-of-the-match performance. Without his heroic efforts, Toronto would have claimed its ninth Canadian Championship crown. Incredibly, the Reds have now gone 330 minutes without a goal in all competitions.
