In 2018, TFC faced Liga MX opponents three separate times in the Concacaf Champions League, and three times they went to Mexico for the decisive second leg. On two occasions, the Reds won the aggregate series; the other time it fell just short in the final via penalty shootout to Chivas.

Now Toronto is off to Mexico once more, looking to overturn a daunting first leg deficit in their quarter-final tie against Cruz Azul.
