Sean Johnson regrets not winning anything with TFC

Toronto FC slumped its way through another disappointing MLS campaign in 2025, failing to make the playoffs for a fifth straight year.
With a 6-14-14 record and 32 points, TFC finished 12th in the Eastern Conference – one spot lower and five points fewer than the previous year. It could have been far worse if not for the efforts of Sean Johnson, who enjoyed his best campaign for the Reds since joining the team as a free agent in 2023.
The veteran goalkeeper started in 31 of 34 regular season games while earning seven clean sheets. He was kept busy throughout the campaign by making 111 saves for an average of 3.58 per game. Only four other goalkeepers across the entire league faced more shots than he did. Yet, Toronto didn't pick up the option on Johnson's contract option for 2026 and couldn't come to terms with the veteran goalkeeper on a new deal that saw him rank among the highest paid goalkeepers in MLS last year when he earned $1,063,125 US.
Johnson, who turned 37 in May, explored free agency in the off-season and signed a one-and-a-half-year contract through June 2027 with D.C. United that will see him make $883,475 this season. He has started all 16 MLS matches for the capital club this year with four clean sheets and is now getting ready to face TFC on Saturday in his first game against his former club.
