Examining Toronto FC's MLS secondary transfer window
It was a pretty quiet summer for GM Jason Hernandez compared to last year, but he still made some important roster moves.
This summer wasn't quite as busy as last year's for Jason Hernandez. But Toronto FC's GM still managed to get some important work done before the MLS secondary transfer window closed this week.
Cast your mind back 12 months ago. TFC was in a state of disarray and in need of a major retooling of their roster. Big changes were needed, a fact not lost on Hernandez who dropped a Canada Day bombshell with the announcement that Italians DPs Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi were both bought out of their contracts.
A little more than a month later Hernandez brought in a new DP in the form of Djordje Mihailovic in a cash-for-player-trade with the Colorado Rapids worth a guaranteed $8 million US. The underwhelming Matty Longstaff was traded to CF Montreal. Tyrese Spicer was dealt to Orlando City. Deybi Flores was sold to Al Najma SC in Saudi Arabia. José Cifuentes was secured on a year-long loan from Rangers.
Hernandez didn’t make nearly as many roster changes or any truly transformative moves this summer before the closure of the league’s transfer window on Wednesday as there wasn’t nearly as big of a mess for him to clean up. But the GM was still able to make some moves that should strengthen his side both in the short- and long-term.
