Feb. 23, 2024: Reds adds Nicksoen Gomis to roster

Toronto FC signs French defender Nicksoen Gomis from English club Sheffield United FC to a two-year deal through 2025 with options for 2026 and 2027.

Quick analysis: Toronto FC continues to add defensive reinforcements with the signing of Gomis, whose arrival at the MLS club comes on the heels of this week's earlier additions of Richie Laryea and Kevin Long.

Gomis, 21, joins the Reds following a trial during pre-season training camp.

“We are delighted to add Nicksoen to our club after a successful pre-season trial,” Toronto GM Jason Hernandez said in a media release.

“Nicksoen quickly demonstrated his quality in defence and integrated seamlessly into our First Team environment. He arrives with a strong pedigree, having formative years at distinguished European platforms. We are confident he will continue to grow within the team over the 2024 season and beyond.”

Gomis originally joined the Sheffield United Academy in 2018 and represented the team at the under-18 and under-21 levels in Premier League Professional Development League and FA Youth Cup. The towering centre-back – he stands six-feet-one and weighs 176 pounds – spent the 2022-23 season on loan with Beerschot VA in the Belgian second division), scoring two goals in 11 appearances for the club’s under-23 team. He also played for the senior team.

The native of Évreux, France native also went on loan with Bradford Park Avenue AFC in 2021, making seven appearances in the National League North (England's sixth tier). Internationally, Gomis has represented France at youth level and made two appearances for the French under-18 team.

Given Gomis' age and experience, this appears to be a depth signing by TFC; a player for the future as opposed to someone who can come directly into the starting 11 and make an immediate impact for the Reds.

The French youngster joins a group of centre backs that includes Long, Shane O'Neill, Sigurd Rosted, Aimé Mabika, and Luke Singh. Even if Singh goes out on loan again for a third straight season, you'd have to think that Gomis will likely be used as a fourth- or fifth-choice centre back by John Herdman.
